General W-League Discussion 2016/17

I don't think many understand the amount of money that goes into building & maintaining such a facility.

Others like us will get there but take a bit longer, unlike many believe there is no penny pinching involved with our ownership group. All money gets reinvested & put towards our fancy new facility to house our men's, women's & youth teams.

Good article on the Melb City W-League team

http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/blog/2016/11/28/why-clubs-hate-melbourne-city

Though she contradicts herself with her conclusion. At first she says Melbourne Heart had the vision but not the means to implement what City have since done, but in the end she says that it's not about money...

Also their W-League team being successful isn't why we hate Vision City lol.

Of course it's down to money. Whilst I can see some angst about City poaching other club's best players, the City Group are to be congratulated for pumping so much money into their women's program.

Full power to them for actually using the salary cap as opposed to only a partial amount which others A-League clubs use.

It now places the onus on the other clubs to step up to the plate. Yes City are backed by oil money but it now calls for clubs to put resources towards women's football.

Just a WRGMG moment. Canberra, by being absolutely dogged by the FFA in terms of getting an a league teams, has been going with a "capital Coast Mariners" kind of thing. Two of Canberra Uniteds home games are being held in Gosford as a result instead of in Canberra. Today I got an email from CU in regards to this, which says:

"Just a few quick points of interest regarding the Canberra United home match at Central Coast Stadium on 18th against Brisbane Roar. I have been in contact with Central Coast Mariners, and they have put aside a bay for our members"

How nice that the club has to let us know that we'll have our own Bay... At a "home" game! Absolutely bizzare.

On a personal level it's not a big deal bar an extra couple of hours driving total, but Canberra and Gosford don't have any relationship whatsoever and it's a pain in the ass for Canberra members to drive up there for a game. Canberra crowds do very well at home, at Gosford though... At least for Wanderers home games, they're always in Western Sydney! And the club doesn't have to send emails guaranteeing home bays :P

In the Herald Scum article about the new Parra stadium: "There will be four team changerooms to allow women's games to be played before a men's game"

Remembering the article from a few months ago about W-League player conditions, and how the changing facilities were woefully inadequate all around with the exception of Canberra and City, this is good news. IIRC that article mentioned how during one of the derbies the Smurfs team had to get changed in a tiny storage room!

Canberra United have signed Matilda legend Lisa De Vanna for the rest of the season! If we don't win the premiership now I'll take a dump on my cat!

I'm aware Oz are good at womens footy. Hows is the W-League as a standard for Womens football?

As part of my blog and project, I need to report this league as well as equality to me is important.

Some W League games are broadcast live on free-to-air  Australian TV via the ABC ( Australian Broadcasting Network ).You can watch previous games via their iview service,This link may be a good place to start...http://iview.abc.net.au/programs/football-w-league/SP1614H009S00..

You can watch for yourself and make an impartial judgement.

Needs more money to get to the same level as top women's leagues like in the USA, France and Germany. Too many of the clubs have literally no dedicated facilities or grounds for the women, and the meagre salary cap of $150,000 has only ever been reached by two of the 9 clubs (Canberra United and Melbourne City, which is owned by City Football Group). Only these two teams could really compete in the other leagues I think, but I haven't followed women's football too closely in other countries to be quite certain.

The league overall is still decent IMO despite the serious lack of funding by many clubs, and I think this has to do with general Australian sporting culture being more accepting of women athletes compared to other parts of the world. The W-League does attract some solid international players, a recent example is Yukari Kinga for Canberra who has nearly 100 caps for the Japan national team.

The W-League was formed after Australia made it to the quarter-finals of the women's world cup in 2007 for the first time in order to try and make the Aus national team (the 'Matildas') stay competitive. So far it has done this quite well, and the Matilda's have been consistently in the top-10 for the last few years and have a few very notable talents (Gorry, Heyman, De Vanna come to mind).

In previous years, apart from the import players, were paid peanuts & often had to pay for there own travel to games, physio's, etc & then should have seen some of the atrocious stories of poor treatment especially compared to the men.

Valter is correct, many steps forward for the women's game in Australia but many more to come. It doesn't help that we have an incompetent organisation running our game (FFA) whose conservative approach is hurting the growth of professional football in Australia.

I know one other team in the league also used the full salary cap this season. But most likely it's the last club you'd expect.

Victory have also beaten City. Looks like the magical run for City last season has run out, and they are officially out of the running for the premiership.

Two rounds left to go, top of the table is tight:

ESFC 22 points

CBR 20 points

Perth 20 points

All three teams are up against softer teams (We are soft, as our recent loss clearly shows) so if I had to make a call I reckon the Smurfs will get this one. Hopefully they bottle it on their final away game in Adelaide and CBR can snatch the premiership.
