Thanks

Dont think any forum regulars might know but Layles (from the club) will definitely know

I'd just tweet (twitter) or message (Facebook) the official account, then post back here so we know too :)

Oh & welcome to forum :good:

City bolstering their squad by signing Erika Tymrak from Kansas City:

"An attacking midfielder, Tymrak burst on to the scene with a stellar debut season for FC Kansas City in 2013, claiming the NWSL Rookie of the Year Award with six goals and four assists from 21 matches.

Tymrak has since gone on to make 61 appearances for Kansas City, winning two NWSL titles in 2014 and 2015, while also gaining experience in Europe during a brief loan stint at Bayern Munich."

Looks like another easy season for City. I hear Timmy Cahill might be making an appearance for them too  :ninja:

Tickets for the Gosford v Wellington game in Canberra are being sold as double header tickets, since the W-League season opener Canberra v Melbourne City game will be at GIO Stadium beforehand. Good strategy to get some interest for the Canberra United team. The Canberra team gets pretty good attendances relative to the other W-League teams, so will be interesting to see how many we get at this game.

Here's one for the ladies who seek ambition to go on to that next level. Check this out, if you think you may know someone who may like to trial for State League, get them down to Rydalmere on Sunday.

Hopefully we can unearth possibly some local talent , who knows possibly even the next Matilda.

Cheers

Mick

Crowd seems a bit light, can't see droves of people turning out for a depleted Wellington side & a coastie team who are trying to find there feet. What is the temp like? Seems hot?

Poor buggers, even in the second, so many good chances gone wanting! Maybe not clear cut chances however they have gotten into some very good positions!

2.5k crowd for the United game. Lots have left instead of staying for the A league game so unless there are some late comers then attendance could be more for the women than men!

There is a cool breeze, not too bad for footy. Cooled down significantly since the 3pm kick off

Afghan team pioneer a new path for women in football

A football team made up of Afghan refugee girls are set on bringing down the barriers for Muslim girls in sport

Sixteen-year-old Maryam Anvari came to Australia from Afghanistan two years ago.

She'd never played sport of any kind, until she joined ACE FC.

"Afghan girls usually dont play sports but they can, they can do it, they can play as well as other girls can do it," she said.

ACE FC is a team of mainly Afghan Muslim girls, mostly former refugees. All are highly skilled.

Anvari said she often gets approached by coaches after they see her play.

"When I play in tournaments they come to me and ask, 'do you want to play for us?' but I say, 'no, I already have a team, sorry.'"

A team that is more like a family to most of the girls.

Captain and goal keeper Sahara Khan said their shared heritage makes them a close unit, but not closed off to new members.

"We all have a same history, same background story. But we do have one Papua New Guinean girl and she's my school friend. She's starting to learn a little Dari," she said.

But the team has had its struggles on and off the pitch.

Coach Shukrullah Hazara said it took some convincing to get the more traditional Afghan parents to agree to the idea of a girl's football team.

"When I approached the parents they said, 'Girls soccer? Are you sure?' I said, 'Yeah they can do it!' And once they come here and see the girls they like it."

The club asks no fees of its members, with the coaching team often paying for equipment and tournaments from their own pockets.

Coach Ali Reza Haidari said the girls have already had to overcome cultural barriers, ACE FC don't want financial ones to be a problem as well.

"None of them pay even one dollar, they just come here and train and we do the best for them to help them."

Afghan community leader Hussain Danesh said he's pleased the next generation of Afghan girls have the opportunity to play football.

"The young girls have a lot of abilities but so far haven't had much support to be involved in sport," he said. "I'm hoping with support they can progress well."

The team started in 2015 with just a handful of members, now ACE FC has over 30 players turning up to training twice a week.

While most have no history in the sport there's high hopes for their future.

Captain Sahara Khan said she's determined to pioneer a new path for girls like her.

"I want to be known to people as a Muslim girl playing soccer, someone who breaks barriers," she said.

The team is hoping to raise enough funds to attend a tournament in Sydney next month, and show the rest of Australia Afghan girls play sport and they play it well.

Say what you will about Melbourne City and what that club represents, but so far IMO their impact on women's football in this country has been hugely positive by treating women athletes as real professionals and not a unprofitable side venture for a club. Their new training facilities look amazing, and is something that the rest of the W-League clubs should seek to emulate.

Another beautiful afternoon for football. I'm a bit flat after last night, so hoping for a pick me up this arvo.

A bit flat after last night? So were you suicidal after the Sydney, Jets and Mariners home games?

One of the kids friends joined for lasts nights game. She decided that it was too noisy so we had to leave at half time (apparently it was too loud for the poor darling.). I thought we were unfortunate to go in at 0-1 (plus I was grumpy at having to leave, but didn't want the kids to know). Watching the replay if the second half just wasn't the same (I should have been there damn it!)

The girls finished 0-2, so I Didn't get the pick me up I needed, but at least there was closure.

Only if we are all bought by generous benefactors like The City group !!
