What is brilliant about SH is he doesn't just defend our game, he juxtaposes all the relevant criticisms, jibes, jokes, stereotypes against the cultural, historical and social paradigms of AFL and League, specifically when those paradigms are based on ridiculous 'sheilas, wogs and pooftahs' attitudes, and pulls them apart point by point. He applies the kind of logic, the rigorous intellect that frankly evades most of the bogans who bitch about sokkah (including the likes of Cornes, Panahi, Conn, Liaw etc etc). Then, to add further cred to his comments, he doesn't shy away from admitting football's faults, and trying to place them in the appropriate context.

 

I'm no regular reader or interested party in aerial ping pong or league journalism, but very few if any would apply such intellectually sound methodologies to defend or explaining their preferred sports. Roy Masters might be one. However Simon Hill puts almost all the other 'journos' and commentators in the eggball codes (as well as some football pundits...hello the Cock, Bossi etc) to shame.

I'm not sure how long he defines recent years as but considering we won the ACL, the plate and made 3 GFs in 4 years, that stat is not as valid as it first reads.

I've done the stats. No team has been more successful than us in the last 4 years. It's garbage.

 

Adelaide and Victory may claim it - they've both won the double and also an FFA Cup whereas we've won a Prem and an ACL, so they may claim 3 trophies to 2 in that time. But of course the double is no great feat once you've won a the Premiership, and of course ACL is the biggest. Plus 3 grand final appearances is no mean feat.

 

But there are some Wanderers fans who get so upset that we're not going so well this year, that they think Bris and Melb are better.

 

I swear Bossi just reads social media and taps into concerns of Wanderers fans, whether they're legitimate or not. Hack.

Very good viewing numbers from last night according to Media Week.  The Adelaide v Victory game got 90k on FOX (up against the Big Brash) but Brisbane and Jets from 5:30pm rated almost 80K. :)

 

Syd derby got 140K in round 1. Be interesting to see how it does next week directly against the Big Bash derby too. I would say 100k would be a pass.

It is a great piece from Simon there, totally relate to it. I get stick from my wife's family at family events for following 'soccer'. They are Swanies and Sixers supporters. They wanted to take my son to the cricket next weekend just to pish me off, they never usually have any interest in taking him anywhere but knew the two coincided. But then I shouldn't be too surprised because my wife's mother in law side have NEVER made me feel welcome in Australia and to them I am an outsider and always will be. Been here since 2001 and they came around the other day and I mentioned how hot it had been as general conversation, they snapped 'hey you leave our weather alone'  lol Daft chunts, but that is how it has been since day 1. They HATE it when my son  has his Wanderers top on, 1 because it is 'soccer' and 2 because it represents Western Sydney.

 

And here is the thing, my Mother in Law is the worst kind of Westie there is surely, born and raised in the deepest western Syndey and by luck of second marriage living in the affluent area of the eastern suburbs and now looks down on anything west Sydney related and 'wouldn't be seen dead back out there' and talks about her old school mates still stuck out there.

 

Horrible horrible people that I am amazing half produced my wife, but that is the kind of person / people Simon refers to and that I have encountered,

Every time I see old mate Phil 'The Jew' Moss on Foxsports as part of their 'expert panel' I lose hope for Strayan Sockah.

 

Just for the people who do not know, he was a horrendous player back in his day and was gifted a professional contract at Northern Spirit by his good mate Graham Arnold, he was also Arnold's assistant at the Mariners and was handed his first professional head coach gig when Arnold left for Japan.

I for one would pay good money to watch some a-league squaddies play the indoor mode on FIFA Road to World Cup 98 in the off season.

Futsal - very underrated sport! It should be an Olympic sport in place of the outdoor version.

Agree, but I think member nations won't want that to happen.

The IOC won't want it to happen. Football makes them a shitload. They wanted football in, FIFA didn't want to take away from the World Cup, so they compromised with the U23 thing.

I enjoyed that Simon Hill podcast. Makes a good point about how we should try and be engaging more with AFC players (but hopefully those of a better calibre than Jumpei)

Simon Hill has been banging on the last few weeks about how the AFC should be promoting the ACL more and make it more worthwhile for people to get engaged in.

Yet he works for Foxsports who refused to show the ACL final (both legs) over one of the $hitty Indian Football leagues. And showed none of the games once the HAL teams were eliminated.

 

Look in your own backyard first Hill before criticising the AFC.

They showed heaps when ADP was playing for Sydney. I had a fair few people contact me about how great the Wanderers fans were in games against Sydney FC

BT Sport show them all live.  You can watch them live streaming here via BT on the alternative viewing channels.
