Piovaccari Scores! City Smashed!

Federico Piovaccari scored his first goal in the Red & Black in a 3-0 rout of Melbourne City

The evolution of the Wanderers continued in Round 6 of the A-League in Melbourne, and Western Sydney broke the shackles in front of goal with a storming second half, as Mark Bridge, Piovaccari and Mitch Nichols all hit the back of the net.

Andrew Redmayne provided the best chance of the half for his former side, with a dreadful attempt at playing out from the back across the face of his own goal, he found City winger Harry Novillo. Fortunately instead of a first time shot, Novillo took enough touches that Redmayne could scramble back to smother his shot.

Mere moments after the break, Mitch Nichols scored for the second game on the trot. The outstanding right flank combination of Vidosic & Neville got in behind the City defence, with Nichols having ghosted to the back post he was unmarked and couldn't miss from point blank range.

Vidosic & Neville combined once again, assisted by some sub-standard officiating and a Melbourne City defence that decided to stop playing, Piovaccari had his long awaited goal. Neville was lucky enough to knock a pass against a City defender, while Vidosic was in an offside position he was not involved in the play itself, and the referee correctly allowed play to continue. Piovaccari kept playing and Neville found the Italian striker unmarked.

Mark Bridge shut the game down as a contest in the 84th minute with yet another tap-in. Jaushua Sotirio worked enough space to get a shot away only to see it screw wide off the boot. Happily for Bridge it rolled into a perfect position between the City defence and keeper, Bridge knocking home his 50th goal in the A-League.

After an early season of frustration, the Wanderers look like they've got a groove going. Andreu absolutely dominated the Mooy-less midfield of Melbourne, Topor-Stanley played more like Matthew Spiranovic in the heart of defence and Piovaccari finally getting on the scoreboard. Western Sydney are up to 3rd place on the A-League ladder and regardless of other results will stay in the top 6 after the weekend.

JayZko, it could be worse mate. He could have scored in a loss. Be thankful he contributed (eventually) to a dominant win.

And don't worry, the way he played in that first half, I gave him no chance of scoring too!

Good to see the team controlling the game. Happy for Pio to get the monkey off his back... TBH before his goal he was playing the same way he did for the first 5 games.

Hopefully this will take the pressure off him and we finally start playing with 11.

We're 3rd Place already!?!

Sydney & Brisbane, we're coming for you!!!

What a completely dominating performance. We bossed it from start to finish. The only chances they seemed to get was when we slipped up and gave away the ball.

Even then, we looked cool, calm, collected and in control.

And now that our Striker is off the mark, watch the floodgates open.

COYW!!!

BTW - The old Heart should just rename their club again to 'Mooy City FC'. Because they can't play without him.

Neville had an absolute gem of a game for me and didn't get booked to boot.  Our ball retention is getting better and better.  The only reason the possession count is nearly even is we sat back with about 15 and let them come at us.

Pleased for Pio. He kept playing when all around stopped.  I know he comes and goes in games but I feel I saw a lot more desire from him this evening.  Hopefully that gives him the confidence to go on.

And we're third.  It's like oxygen mask time.

Popa deserves a lot of credit for the win tonight. He's always been strong with man management, structure and discipline but tonight he showed himself as a master tactician.

Sotirio deserves much praise for the run and cross that led to Bridge's goal.

Bridges was on the money about Pio, but credit to Pio for following through and seeing the ball into the net, even if it was the defence switching off that gave him prime position. He also played the perfect decoy when Vidosic played Nicholls through.

Aspro struggled with the ball and City's high pressing but showed great composure off it. One instance, his poor first touch led to a chance...Aspro recovered perfectly and was calm as a cucumber winning the ball back - cleanly and swiftly.

The Spaniards were two levels above what they showed last week. They were the fulcrum in a dominant midfield display. I actually thought they were a little disappointing (by their standards) v Newcastle but tonight they were lucid, fluid and influential.

Vidosic and Nicholls showed class. When combining together they are a joy to watch. Bridge also provided good movement, held up the ball well and showed craft on the ball.

Neville provided a lot of movement. At times his decisions and distribution was disappointing. Other times he was fantastic.

Redmayne was good apart from that shocking moment I can't even fathom. The recovering save he made was equally as unbelievable.

We have 3 players that should be in the mix for a Socceroos call up: Vidosic, Nicholls and Jamieson. Jamo is at least as good as Meredith IMO.
