Knocking down Allianz would be stupid. Apart from smurf fans glass botteling the RBB from the corporate boxes there is not much wrong with Allianz. When it's full it has a great atmosphere.

There is nothing much right with ANZ as it stands right now. But a renovated 80k seater - now that would be something. If they were to put a roof on it: it would come off at the derby.

100% agree with first part of your post about allianz. No one has been able to adequately explain to me why it needs all that money spent on it. Having been to a few stadiums around the world I think for atmosphere/actually watching football it is right up there and to me it still seems fit for purpose.

Alexander did a good job a few pages back or maybe in the old thread, saying it's terrible for wheelchair access. I'm sure there's not much that requires the knock down and start over approach though surely.

Even fixing up the wheelchair access wouldn't require that much investment. Basically, all they need to do is:

    1.  make 1 stall wide enough for wheelchair access in each of the men's and women's bathrooms  

         throughout the stadium (like at Bluetongue Stadium)

    2.  create space for 2 wheelchair plus 2 companion seats the top of the stairs between each bay on Level 1

         - wouldn't need to be between every bay either, perhaps every 2nd or 3rd bay.

My comment was tongue in cheek.  The roof of ANZ slopes down from the back towards the pitch meaning that a steeper rake (slope) on the stand results in the tier of seating intersecting the line of the roof lower than it currently does and closer to the pitch.  i.e. the steps are higher and the vertical space is less so their are less but steeper steps.

 

In reality there is a maximum allowable slope on steps which is about 34 degrees.  I don't have any detail as to whether this has been relaxed by any authority in Australia.  In some places in Europe the allowable slope is greater.  i.e. from memory in Italy it is 41 degrees.

Have you written to Gallop/FFA and the Premier about it?  I think it is worth taking up in official channels.

 

The FFA appointed a panel of historians to advise them a few years ago.  They might be good for support of the idea.

I noted Ed's comments about scaling some steeply raked stadium steps.... and what West and AEK said about feeling anxious when some positions at the top of a stadium are so steep.

 

Can't remember how I felt right at the top of ANZ during the Olympics... but the top and in the middle of AAMI is a bit dizzying. 

 

And some overseas stadia I've seen on TV (maybe during Asian Cup?) look to me almost as steep as climbing a ladder!       

 

It'd still be worth it though, to get really decent seats... ......I think.

One comment I will make on it is that the provision for wheel chair positions is not adequate.  These days they are required to be able to see the pitch if the people in front of them stand which normally is catered for by a double height riser between the seating plats.

I'm not scared of heights or anything like that but I found it a bit touch and go walking up and down those stairs right up in the nose bleeds at ANZ. You really have to watch yourself, one wrong step and you're done... Surely they couldn't make it any steeper, you'd be close to going up on all fours.

Okay, have started work on a new design, keeping in with some of the requests so far. Apologies for the image size, but that's how big they're uploaded originally.

 

 

 

 

So I've had to use the bowl design for the extends of the stadium (will look better once a roof is done) to squish it into the existing site as best I can. The eastern side has a large open area (in the centre of the lower tier) so we can get Manfred's Bar in there. The RBB end is larger than the southern-end, which itself has an open deck and will have large viewing windows to showcase the new and improved Parramatta skyline.

Can I just say though, that I don't like curved upper tiers.

I prefer my tiers to be even and extend around ends. There is more enclosure that way, trapping more sound. I would love double tiers at the ends, with the roof extending around as an even entity.

Good stuff though.

There was a design you did previously for the 30500 capacity stadium, which I thought was perfect. I'll try and dig it up.

Would it be feasible to have a similar (but smaller) open area at the same walkway height in the North Terrace so the accessible seating/spaces don't have to be so detached from the rest of the RBB. Perhaps extending the terrace a few rows higher so there is no loss in capacity, but still remaining a single tier.

I also prefer the uniform design all around, but the above one with the red/black seats wouldn't fit lengthwise in the current space, that was a fantasy design.

 

The other option is to do something similar to the above, but just have the ends smaller and without a 2nd tier, but still enclosed?
