KGee Posted August 13, 2017 Posted August 13, 2017 Won our match 1-0 yesterday. Down to 8 players in the second half. Need to work on our discipline but boy it felt good to hold on. Oldest son also went to Grand Final at first attempt after a penalty shoot-out and youngest played Kellyville Kolts. What a toxic club culture they have. Awful coach. Awful parents and I've seen so many discipline matters with them this year across many teams. And the youngest won his game. Not normally bothered as it's non comp but this felt good. Good times. But season over for me as we can't make Grand Final next week in GHFA. wendybr and Prydzopolis 2

Gazmon Posted August 13, 2017 Posted August 13, 2017 Capped off the regular season with a comfortable 4-1 win. The only goal conceded was off-side following a very dubious free kick... hmmmm. Finished 2nd, one point behind first with the same goal difference. Only other major difference is they've conceded 21 and we've only had 14. So we're a much better defensive team, even if we don't score as many. Missing one of three top players for the 1st week of finals and maybe one of the other two if he's not fit. So I'm resigned to the fact we'll lose the 1st week and have to play week 2. See what happens I guess. Prydzopolis and wendybr 2
KGee Posted August 26, 2017 Posted August 26, 2017 Son's team won his Grand Final this morning. Please to see that the President of the Hills Comp was keen to stress the difference between the Premiers (they won this too) and the Grand Final indicating that effectively they were quite different competitions and both were important in their different ways calling the end of season Championship competition a cup competition. Well done to him even though he's a monumental dickhead. GunnerWanderer, wendybr, Prydzopolis and 1 other 4
lloydy136 Posted August 26, 2017 Posted August 26, 2017 Lloydy jr lost his grand final 3-2 this morning. Cracking game could have gone either way - opposition scored with last kick of the game. Bit tough to take but it's been a great season - really enjoyable coaching. On the plus side - I get to sleep in next Saturday GunnerWanderer, wendybr, mack and 4 others 5 2

I'm not 100% sold on the idea myself, but I do understand the intent. It will be interesting if we end up trailing it next year as has been suggested. Respect marks. Don't referee's have enough to do, especially if there's no AR's? Again, not a bad idea, just the implementation is an issue for me. I haven't coached a great deal, but I think it's crazy that there needs to be a 'rule' for 'all positions'. Why aren't coaches doing this already, especially for the younger kids as part of their introduction / development? 5 hours ago, Unlimited said: Define "junior football" - im guessing this is like miniroos? Miniroos getting yellow / blue (red!) cards? I hope the definition is broader than that! Prydzopolis 1
MadKaw Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 (edited) Obviously only for non competitive football (below u/12) and I'd think only suited to the very young age groups... Edited October 19, 2017 by MadKaw
Davo Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 The goalkeeper rules are weird. They want them to get better with their feet but when they get it the opposition has to run away. Prydzopolis and theguyyouwishyouwere 2

If they take turns in all positions, that won't be a problem I like the thing where the coaches can't tell players want to do, only question them to make the kids think - that will help grow intelligent players Not sold on the blue card - the current system works, let's not complicate it. Paul01 Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 I have to coach a few times in the last couple of years. For my eldest son's team i had to do u11 and u12 match days. By that time, their main coach had got the players into positions. However, i did have to make substitutions where the subs were placed in different position. When i coached my youngest son in u9s, i made sure that all the team of 7 played in every position in either a 1-3-3 or a 1-2-2-2 formation. IMO Rotation of positions should be employed in Miniroos u8 to u10s. From u11s, players should still experience different roles via substitutions but be in more defined roles (DF, MF, FW) getting ready for full field games. wendybr 1
smp Posted October 26, 2017 Posted October 26, 2017 At our club all mini Roos coaches (up to U11) are strongly encouraged to ensure that all players have an opportunity to experience all positions. Players really only start getting pigeon-holed at U11-U12 level. Of course, we’re just a small grassroots club so it’s more about fun and learning than it is about winning as we don’t have the resources to provide a more elite experience. A lot of those FA proposals look very similar to what is either already mandated in our small-sided games, or are unwritten rules people tend to follow (like lending players to teams that are short). Not convinced about the “Respect marks” though. Refs (when we even get them) have enough to do without having to give our marks. Prydzopolis, SomeGuy1977 and wendybr 3
Hughesy Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 Let’s be honest, these new frameworks are all just being updated so they’re PC. Kids need to learn how to lose in order to accept defeat and develop that drive to improve. Above all it makes winning that much more satisfying. None of these new frameworks facilitate any of that and basically do the exact opposite. I don’t agree with the no instructions rule either. You can deliver instructions in a calm and effective manner without shouting. Sometimes kids need to be told what to do and that shouldn’t be frowned upon. Edinburgh Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 Hey Hawks - you must be a happy chap with Doonside winning the Champion of Champions.
ColdRock Posted November 5, 2017 Posted November 5, 2017 They and Parklea have been having deep runs in state comps in recent years. Haven't followed their results for some time, maybe @Frankos187 could say something here, but if you don't get any Sutherland and Riverina teams in your bracket you can go a long way

You can deliver instructions in a calm and effective manner without shouting. Sometimes kids need to be told what to do and that shouldn’t be frowned upon. Thing is though, nearly 30 years ago when I played U10, the strategy of all teams was to hoof it long from the back to the fast kid on the wing who would either run and score or run and pass to a striker. Mid field was non-existent, defenders were only taught "if in doubt kick it out or kick it long", and players were pigeon-holed early because the focus was on winning, not on developing any skills. This wasn’t just my club, this was basically how everyone played in Brisbane in the 80s. I look at the standard of football played in the older miniroos and it looks much better than I grew up with. Kids are picking up skills all over the park and seem to understand the game better. There’s more passing and attempts to build up play. If sacrificing the "win at all costs" mental toughness to build better skills is the price, then I for one am prepared to pay that price. Anyway, the kids know at the end of each game who won and lost, and kids know when they are having a good season or a **** season. They don’t need points on a table or a finals series for that. Trust me. I’ve seen too many tears and too much motivation to improve when things are going poorly over the last couple of years from young teams to believe any different. Just my 2c obviously, but I think there is more good than bad in our small-sided game compared to what I grew up with.
BBB Posted November 6, 2017 Posted November 6, 2017 When my son was playing in the younger age groups, I liked that as a coach I could be on the field with the team. It gives you the ability to speak to players on the run and not have to yell across the field. It was really good when a player was struggling and you could just jog up beside them when they were off the ball and give them a little pep talk. Or when someone had done something good, you could give them some praise.
theguyyouwishyouwere Posted November 16, 2017 Posted November 16, 2017 sometimes you have to yell instructions because the kids are on the other side of the field...

He is so keen to play. Particularly after last week. He is playing Div 2 this year for a new club that don't know him. Hence him not being selected in Div 1 after the trials. His Div 2 team played the Div 1 team from the same club last Sunday. He is our striker (CF). We were losing 5 -0 with a few minutes remaining. Our keeper kicks a long ball out from the box. Young Wanderboy perfectly traps the ball just on the opposition side of half way. On his own, he turns and takes on 3 defenders, heads forward and a bit to the right, creates a bit of space and then chips the keeper from 35 metres out. Loudest cheer of the day from both teams sets of parents. It was Danny Choi-esque. A very proud dad (me) clapped reservedly, but I felt really good inside. He gave me a wink when he left the field at fulltime. I love football. Edited March 17, 2018 by Wanderboy theguyyouwishyouwere, EmMac, Edinburgh and 6 others 9
