Wanderers Finish Pre-Season With 2-0 Win Over Bankstown

The Western Sydney Wanderers have finished their pre-season with a solid victory over the competitive Bankstown City at Jensen Park tonight, winning by 2 goal to 0 through Aaron Mooy and Tomi Juric in the first and second halves respectively.

In clear but chilly conditions the Western Sydney Wanderers dominated much of the possession and attacking impetus in the first 45 minutes. Bankstown cleared several shots off their own line with the goalkeeper not in sight, and with the break in sight Aaron Mooy scored just before half-time to make good on the Wanderers superiority. Tahj Minniecon took most of the plaudits in the first half with several lighting breaks down the right, while his wing partner Santalab caused his own share of problems on the left.

It became clear that Tony Popovic was electing to play two completely different teams in each half when he kept the first half squad on the pitch for a warm-down while his second half-squad warmed up, and Youssouf Hersi & Shinji Ono were the pick of the second half line-up. Matthew Spiranovic made his first appearance in the red & black hoops of Western Sydney, and Martin Lo once again impressed although as the game wore on he became less influential.

Bankstown had several chances to equaliser, with Jerrad Tyson coming out of his box to head clear what looked to be a simple one-on-one chance before it could develop, and then making a wonderful save at point blank range to deny Bankstown again. Just when Bankstown were pressing for an equaliser Juric ended the game as a contest with his late sliding effort.

The Wanderers next game is Round 1 of A-League Season 2013/14, against the Central Coast Mariners in Gosford, 5:30PM Kick-Off on Saturday the 12th of October 2013.

Was very impressed by Minniecon, he seems fit and quick, ready to dart down the line and swing in a cross. A few crosses were off tonight, but he is looking keen.

Spiranovic could get himself caught out if he uses his hands as much as he did challenging the high ball when he comes up against more experienced forwards prepared to play for the foul, he otherwise looked calm on the ball, but wasn't really tested.

Martin Lo was very good, a real future prospect. Controls well and gets his head up quick looking for some good passes - of which he delivered plenty.

Chances infront of goal weren't so frequent, sometimes teammates getting in each others way or just a misplaced cross/run. Not to be concerned about, it just looks like a bit more time together before Rd1 to get things finalised.

Reasonable effort from the team tonight. I hope they can step it up a gear once the season starts.

It was good to see Lyall, our Chairman, sitting in the middle of the stand with all the fans.

was a very good match, we seemed to have plenty of chances but didnt quite have the finished product, some of their team impressed a lot i think 57 or 67(couldnt quite read the number) was very good

What was the crowd like, was Jensen sold out?

Any takers of the likely starting 11 for round 1?

My feeling from the other side of the world that it will be the semi final team with juric upfront instead of the archbishop.

I saw Simon Hill there! i was gonna get a photo and autograph but then i thought 'meh'

The RBB stepped it up again, even older chants are sounding better, people must have been taking singing lessons in the off season. Admirable work by the band too.

We are going all the way this season if Ono and Hersi can stay fit for the majority. COYW!

Their back line were hacks and crunched Hersi a number of times which were just not warranted for a friendly.

Yep #17 in particular.
