Dapper Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 http://nz.sports.yahoo.com/football/news/article/-/20823717/i-wanted-to-stay-at-wanderers-says-ono/ Western Sydney marquee Shinji Ono admits he would have stayed at the A-League club if they'd offered him a contract extension. And while there's no bad blood between the two parties, Ono leaves the Wanderers with a heavy heart and harbours hopes of coming back. Western Sydney confirmed on Thursday the Japanese playmaker will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of this season to join J-League division-two side Consadole Sapporo. Ono was approached by Sapporo in November and said he held out making his decision in the hope the Wanderers would offer him an extension. "I got this offer in November and I had to think about what I want to do," he said on Friday. "It was very tough to make a decision to go back. "I wanted to stay as long as possible with the Wanderers because I love to stay, I love to work with this team. "It's very tough but I decide to go." Asked if things would have been different if the Wanderers had also made him an offer, Ono said: "Yes of course. "Yes, I expect offer from the Wanderers because I think they maybe wanted to offer to me but I decide before that. I hope." The Wanderers cited homesickness and a desire to be back with his family as the main factor in Ono's return to Japan. Ono dismissed that as the reason and also dismissed any suggestions he was lured by a big money deal or by a lengthy contract. "It was a great offer because of their vision and what they want to do," he said. "It's not important money, it's not important how long. "My family is not the reason I go back home. "But these are difficult questions. I can't say much because the season is still going. "I can say everything after the season." Ono says his aim is to help Sapporo in their charge to win promotion to Japan's top tier but before then his only focus is making sure the Wanderers win back-to-back premierships and go one better with a grand final triumph. Ono, who has played at big-name clubs in the Netherlands, Germany and Japan, added that he thought the Wanderers were by far the most professional side he had been involved with and he'd encourage other Japanese players to make the move Down Under. "I want to be a kind of bridge between Japan and Australia," he said. "I want to keep contact with the Wanderers forever and if there are good players in Japan of course I want to bring them here. "But I'm not an agent," he said with a laugh. The former Japanese international has no intention of Sapporo being his final club and hopes to overtake Kazuyoshi Miura, who is still playing in Japan's second tier at the age of 46. Asked if he would ever consider one day coming back to the A-League as a coach Ono said: "I want to come back to here as a player."
mack Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 I think it was way too early in the season for the club to be offering extensions for a foreign marquee for what would have been a 3rd year. We're not even half-way through our season in terms of games (not to mention any additional final series matches). Can't blame either party for how they have done things. DontCallMeJacko 1

The veteran midfielder confirmed on Thursday he would head home when his contract runs out in May to play with Japanese second-division club Consadole Sapporo. At 34 and given his history with injury prior to his stint at the Wanderers, it would be fair to assume this would be Ono's last deal before he hangs up his boots. But the former Blue Samurai star said on Friday his passion for football is as strong as ever and he hopes to keep playing for another decade. Asked by Sportal if he believed his Sapporo deal would be his last, Ono declared: "No I don't think so. "I say all the time I don't want to stop football. If I lose my passion I have to stop but I don't think I'll ever lose my passion for football. Maybe I will play another 10 years, 11, 12 as much as I can. "I follow the king Kazu (Kazuyoshi) Miura, he still plays in the J-2 (with Yokohama) and he's 46 or 47 years old. "I want to follow him and overtake him." Ono said he planned to go into coaching 'a long way' down the track and sees himself returning to the A-League. "I want to come back (and coach) but also come back as a player," he said. Ono revealed he had been agonising over Sapporo's advances since November and while he would love to have remained with the Wanderers, the offer was too good to refuse. He insisted the decision was not about money or for family reasons, but it was the right time to head home and the challenge he needs at this stage of his career. Ono rates his Aussie adventure as one of the highlights of his decorated playing resume, which includes stints in Holland and Germany, and said he would recommend the A-League to other Japanese stars. "I want to be the bridge between Japan and Australia," he said. "I want to keep contact with Western Sydney Wanderers and if there's a good player in Japan of course I want to bring (here). "I'm not an agent ... but I want to keep contact with Wanderers forever. "I came here last season it was almost a brand new team and the first year we missed out on the grand final but the regular season we won the championship. "We are still this season second on the table and we want to do it again and we have the (Asian Champions League) so it's still very exciting."

Lmc Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 If we make the finals of the ACL could shinji be loaned to finish the ACL?
mack Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 The rounds after the R16 are months down the track, we'd probably have a new asian player by then.
Montalbano Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 If we make the finals of the ACL could shinji be loaned to finish the ACL? We won't make the finals so I don't think it will be a problem.

Jukes01 Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 (edited) Seriously Ono has been brilliant for us while he has been here. How many of you would have loved for him to stay at the club for another year. I know it would be at least 90%. The only annoying part about this whole process is that it doesn't even look like we even made an offer. If they don't want to make an offer, fine, don't make one, but rather than saying he left for family reasons they could have just said. We have decided to part ways and not renew his contract. Why the need to spin it. That's bullshit. Edited January 17, 2014 by Jukes01 DamnedUnited and wendybr 2
Prydzopolis Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 Those two articles are so polar opposites on the view of him leaving vs wanting another contract. One saying it was time to go home and the other saying he was waiting for a contract extension and wanted to say..... Huh?

Hughesy Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 Hearing him say he wanted to stay makes it even worse, it's like the feeling of your first ever break up, the whole world is ending ! End of the day he's just another player at this club but surely the least that could have been done was placing more priority on looking into an extension, I don't know what to make of the whole thing really, feels like more could have been done... It's a bit disappointing given the impeccably professional service he's provided the club with wendybr 1
MadKaw Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 I notice the video the club posted missed the first bit in this vid.. http://video.news.com.au/v/184422/Shinji-Ono-wants-return-to-ALeague-after-Japan-stint wendybr 1

Jukes01 Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 (edited) I have no problem if the club didn't want to re-sign Shinji. Just be open and honest about it. If you are looking to go into a different direction just say it. I don't understand why the club needs to blatantly lie about why he is going back. If you cant come to terms just say it. If you don't want to offer him a new contract just say so. Don't make it seem like Ono didn't want to stay. This isn't what our club is supposed to be about. That's the only thing I am pissed about. Now we find out Ono wanted to stay and wants to come back at some stage. Why put a spin on things. Its not right. Edited January 17, 2014 by Jukes01 dmixtaaa, WSW27, mark675 and 3 others 6
Lmc Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 If they didnt want to resign him they should have just said something like "He has done what he came here to do" Fair enough if they don't just say "we didn't want him", but to lie about the reason is a bit disappointing. wendybr, 102megan and dmixtaaa 3

lloydy136 Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 yeah I really do hope that the story here isn't that we didn't offer shinji a deal so we could keep making goo-goo eyes at cahill. dmixtaaa 1
