  • Wanderers Win In Season Two Debut

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers completed a 2-0 win over a spirited Macarthur Rams outfit tonight at Campbelltown Stadium in their first pre-season match of the 2013/14 A-League season.

The Wanderers opened their A-League Premiership defence in front of four and a half thousand raucous supporters, including a large contingent in the half-way line RBB section. Heavy rain prior to kick-off dampened expecations of a crowd numbering over 6,000 but those who did turn up were treated to a typical pre-season match. The Wanderers were rusty and had many players out of position or filling in from other State League teams, while the opposition Macarthur were up for the challenge and not bowed by the 2012/13 A-League Premiership winners.

The major surprise of the evening was that the Wanderers line-up included Nick Ward on trial. The utility journeyman, having been released from his second stint with the Perth Glory, took up position at right fullback. Unfortunately for the 28 year old, his performance was well below the standard one would expect from a Wanderers player, with seemingly every touch he made resulting in a loss of possession or killing a potential attacking thrust. He was caught flat-footed on several occasions and his positioning while the Wanderers were in possession was left wanting.

The second was the debut of a truly atrocious pre-season kit by Western Sydney. I don't know if it was created by putting together offcuts of fabric, but the garish striped number will go down in history as one of the worst kits ever used by an A-League team.

The rumours that a new back of shirt sponsor would be coming on board were confirmed as Mitsubishi Electric adorned the strip for the first time. A welcome addition and one that should help push the club closer to a break-even figure by the end of the season.

Two goals were scored on the night, the first half saw Shannon Cole convert a free kick on the half-hour mark. The kick wasn't particularly fast, but it managed to go through the wall and left the Macarthur goalkeeper stranded on the other side of his goal. The match was secured when Mark Bridge scored from close range in the second half with a strong finish after good lead up play from Trifiro and Minniecon. The match was a great way to kick off Season 2013/14 for the club and it's supporters, and I hope that the rest of the pre-season continues in the same manner.

The Wanderers next match will be against Canberra Olympic on Wednesday the 14th of August, 6:15 PM at the AIS Athletics Field in Canberra.

Loved natos flag looked awesome, decent turnout and the new chants sounded pretty good. Our team is finding its feet again and a person next to me noted that the players had some kind of timer/pace maker on their necks to calculate how much they had run. Any one else see this or did the person next to me have to many drinks tonight>?

Don't know what everyone saw in McGing, I thought he and Ward were the worst of the trialists. Peterson wasn't too bad, kinda similar to Dino actually. Went down too easy, but put himself about... Cindric was really good up until the final product... His shots were awful, haha. Barressi wasn't too bad, but Appiah was downright awful. Never once made the right run.

Great to see Tyson get a run out too... Those throws are sexy.

    Great night. Great support. :)

Hersi looked like he played his last game last week. All class.

Minniecon looked very good. Hopefully he stays injury free, could be a real gun this season.

Minni could be our x-factor this year. Like a new signing.

Was surprised with the ugly jerseys and line up,would have been nice to be sent the line up via sms(members etc) to know who was playing, at first didn't realise we had a few on trial like Ward(who wasnt very good).I see why Popa has kept Taj around some good stuff from him and Hersi looked well for the short period out there.Looking forward to hopefully heading to Canberra to see them next week maybe they shouldnt start with ward and other trialist give our current guys a hit out for first half then change at the half.

Was good to hear the RBB out in force again, sounded good from the other side of the pitch

I wasn't there but could it be a GPS unit? They use them in AFL and NRL.

Is there something I don't know about Ward being used as a RB? I don't recall seeing him in any defensive positions for Glory last season, and don't remember him from before then.

wanderers played really well, RBB were loud and the new chants sounded amazing along with the old chants and some of the trailists did really well so it was nice to see

a moment i loved is when the entire Macarthur Rams team all faced us and applauded, one of them also came over to us but i am unsure who that was

Yeah you probably are missing something but so are the rest of us. All we know is, he played there.

    The game:

Good first hit out. Good win. You can tell the class difference in players. MacArthur were compact but really couldn't control the game. They were match fit however.

Our boys had some really good spells particularly in the second half. Chopping and changing was to be expected.

The fans - good effort boys. Love the father to son flag. A few comments on the songs:

Win or Lose: It's a winner, you know the fans love it when it gets a round of applause after its sung.

A Call To Arms: early days but looks a good song, crowd really getting into it. Positive response.

Matador: Again early days, doesn't seem to flow as well as Call to Arms but its a good song. Time will tell f it becomes a favourite.

Glorious: AHHHHHHH! So frustrating. Such a good song/anthem for the RBB but people still not getting into it. By the third rendition large portions of the RBB had lost interest. I don't know what it is.Maybe because it isn't an easy up beat song like Win or lose? Maybe combined with the fact that there is no drum rhythm in the beginning? I don't know. But we need different types of songs in our range, and this compliments us.

you're drunk Jamcal. McGing was awesome.

for those who weren't at the game, we lined up something like this.

    1st Half

    Tyson

    Ward - Skipper - NTS - Cole

    Poljak - Mcging

    Kubi - Baressi - Olsen

    Haliti

Tyson didn't have to do much.

    Ward was hopeless amazing. #trollingmack

Skip and NTS didn't have to do much. Beauchamp loked more comfortable.

Cole didn't really do much. His goal was a copy of the free kick against Sydney FC.

Poljak just crunched blokes as normal.

Mcging MOTM for me. real impressed by the kid who is a WSW youth team player.

Kubi is a long long long way from being an A League player.

    Baressi wasn't noticed much.

Olsen wasn't heavily involved (+ on the other side of the field so didn't really pay attention).

Haliti never got into the game.

    2nd Half

Heaps of changes. Didn't really pay much attention to the guys trialling.

La Rocca played CB, and looked real comfortable. probably an indication of who Popa thinks our 3rd choice CB is.

Mcging slotted into CB and played 90 mins. again, looked composed.

Heffernan played LB. nothing special, but i noticed he was very vocal and his chat was good. he may not play a big part on the field, but he is going to be able to teach some of our kids a great deal this year on the training paddock.

Minneconn was awesome. looked better in 30 mins tonight then he did in his few appearances last season. Tahj >>> Kubi.

Hersi hasn't missed a beat. will be a star again this year.

Bridge came on and played centrally in Ono's position and looked sharp. got into good positions in between the midfield and defensive lines, and scored a well deserved goal.

Trifiro is the ultimate professional. good squad player. will do a job in CM whenever we need him.

I am sore as f*ck this morning. i think the RBB need pre season to get fit as much as the players do

Big call regards Tahj and Kubi Pup. Kubi is young, makes mistakes a lot of young players do. Needs to run less and think more. Will come with experience.

Tahj showed a lot of potential at the Roar but never really developed and progressed. Will he find his form and live up to hi potential or will his career just fizzle out.

If popa kept him he must see something in him.

    Martin Lo.

How do you know he's 14?

I noticed him, to be honest it was because he was 4ft nothing. But he had class. Did not look too out of place at all (once the early nerves wore off and he started getting his positioning right).

If he is indeed 14, sign him up!

Good first hit out for both the Wanderers and the RBB. I was really impressed with Martin Lo. Didn't notice him at first due to his height, but I'm pretty sure he got everyone's attention. Is he a youth player or just a trialist?

Was impressed by Lo. Small in stature doesnt necesarily mean he will get bundled off the ball easily. Thats the beauty of football.

Better centre of gavity too. Only one game cant read too much into ot but he did well.

thought we played pretty good for our first trial game, Second half was definitely better play, In the RBB it sounded great, Call to arms and Win or lose were the better 2 of the new chants, matador was good but you could tell no one knew it properly yet, Security guard that kicked the Flare under the seat was a dickhead and a half, and glorious :sorry: by the 2nd and 3rd time people around me started stopping- plus just on the quite my arms were killing from holding my scarf up.

    was very impressed by Lo

Good wrap up and I agree with most of above. Jamcal was definitely drunk. McGing caught my eye and looked composed and solid in the middle. Ward was absolutely shocking. He'll be lucky to survive another trial. Trifiro was wonderful in the second half. Bridge looks a level above the rest. If Cole hadnt scored, he match rating would've gone from 6 to 4. Kubi is so raw but last night I think he struggled having Ward behind him. They both had no idea what the other was doing. Minniecon looks like a new signing. Impressive last night and his versatility makes him a great squad player. Haliti didn't do much but didn't get much service either.

Jerrard's distribution is a pleasure to watch. Heffernan will be great to have around the team even if he doesn't get heaps of minutes. Although i expect he will. Marty Lo has a bright future. great touch on the youngster.

As for the chants, the new ones were ehh.. I understand not everyone knows them but they are too lyrically complex. They sound like a **** top 40 song. Especially when the tone is lower in parts of the chants, the words arn't even understood and sounds like a big mumble. Then they jump up again and sound good. Parts of those new chants could be chopped out.

I think save WDYSF for the real games. It doesn't need to be practiced and anything less than 100% makes it lose it's value to the WSW brand. Plus, on a night like last night, lots of familys on one side of the stadium on a cold, wet wednesday night don't want to be yelling across the park to the crazy kids on the other side. Lock it up until round 1.
