  • Guangzh-Ouch As Wanderers Run Riot In China

    mack

The Western Sydney Wanderers have demolished Chinese Super League team Guangzhou R&F 5-0 in the second match of their Asian pre-season tour.

In hot conditions the Wanderers took 32 minutes to open the scoring, wunderkind midfielder Martin Lo carved out a chance that was finished by Brendon Santalab. There was no further scoring in the first half.

The second half team was Ante Covic, Shannon Cole, Dean Heffernan, Iacopo La Rocca, Jerome Polenz, Jake McGing, Jason Trifiro, Aaron Mooy, Nick Olsen, Labinot Haliti and Kwabena Appiah.

The new line-up saw immediate rewards when Labinot Haliti was put through on goal by Aaron Mooy, the wing-forward making the score 2-0. 7 minutes later it was three, Haliti again, this time on a through ball by Dean Heffernan.

On the hour a raft of changes were made, as Mark Bridge, Michael Beauchamp, Tomi Juric and Hersi were substituted on in place of Cole, Appiah, McGing & Haliti.

The last 20 minutes belong to Hersi, who scored from just inside the penalty box to make it 4-0 with strong work by Juric to hold and then lay-off a pass to the winger. Aaron Mooy delivered a killer ball to Hersi who slammed it home to make it 5-0 and a thumping victory.

With Hersi, Santalab and Haliti in good form, the midfield working well to create chances and build the play, and the defence keeping a clean sheet, this looks like the epitome of a pre-season match and one that I'm sure the squad and coaching staff will be extremely please with. So far this pre-season the biggest problem being faced by Tony Popovic is who out of all the impressive performers he's going to start. Which is always the best problem a manager can have.

The Wanderers next match is against Tokyo Verde on Thursday the 12th of September.

    shut up sven

Have we signed Martin Lo at all,pen him in for under 20's for at least a couple of years and maybe Popa can use him for a couple of A-league games during the ACL period

Great result bring on ACL and A-league already

Ain't this the mob that forked out 1.3m for Griffiths, then got Sven in as coach? 5-0 is a proper lacing.

I work with a woman, her son plays indoor with Martin and apparently he has been signed to a youth contract. Nothing official though AFAIK.

Yes, they are currently 5th in the CSL. Unsure of what sort of squad they put out though? Did CSL have a week off for FIFA dates? It could have been close to full strength.

No. None of the Griffiths brothers have played for this club.

Mr Hersi has become the first ever Australian Prime Minister to score a goal during a football game.

    Congratulations, Prime Minister Hersi.

Yes, this is the team coached by Sven. According to Wikipedia, Aussie Eddy Bosnar plays for them.

If we beat their first team 5-0, then it's a very good result.

Santalab continuing to play well is good news. Plenty of pressure on bridge/juric to perform to keep their spot.

    Where does he play?

The Shinji role? The Aaron Mooy role? The Hersi role? The Mark Bridge role? etc.

Defensive midfield playmaker is what he's been used at, although he looks good enough to be able to play anywhere in the midfield.

    • So with Shelveyvile winning we are down to 8th. Some key games ahead. We need to get a run and stay on it. That Bulls game is a very frustrating one!
    • mata should be playing CM with Brillante  Priestman and/or Badalto to come on later  not saying it couldn't strengthened but it's far from our main problem  CB we have kids and put of position players starting. If we get Deng at CB then by all means use the visa spot on a ace CM, but we need to sort CB
    • Not so sure about that. Scicluna out for the season leave us with Brillante and Priestman. We aren't winning any games with Mata at CM. Badolato still has a decent amount of maturing to do and I have questions around his defensive capability.  Currently rumours floating around about Tommy Deng too, which would be a great snag
