The Western Sydney Wanderers have demolished Chinese Super League team Guangzhou R&F 5-0 in the second match of their Asian pre-season tour.
In hot conditions the Wanderers took 32 minutes to open the scoring, wunderkind midfielder Martin Lo carved out a chance that was finished by Brendon Santalab. There was no further scoring in the first half.
The second half team was Ante Covic, Shannon Cole, Dean Heffernan, Iacopo La Rocca, Jerome Polenz, Jake McGing, Jason Trifiro, Aaron Mooy, Nick Olsen, Labinot Haliti and Kwabena Appiah.
The new line-up saw immediate rewards when Labinot Haliti was put through on goal by Aaron Mooy, the wing-forward making the score 2-0. 7 minutes later it was three, Haliti again, this time on a through ball by Dean Heffernan.
On the hour a raft of changes were made, as Mark Bridge, Michael Beauchamp, Tomi Juric and Hersi were substituted on in place of Cole, Appiah, McGing & Haliti.
The last 20 minutes belong to Hersi, who scored from just inside the penalty box to make it 4-0 with strong work by Juric to hold and then lay-off a pass to the winger. Aaron Mooy delivered a killer ball to Hersi who slammed it home to make it 5-0 and a thumping victory.
With Hersi, Santalab and Haliti in good form, the midfield working well to create chances and build the play, and the defence keeping a clean sheet, this looks like the epitome of a pre-season match and one that I'm sure the squad and coaching staff will be extremely please with. So far this pre-season the biggest problem being faced by Tony Popovic is who out of all the impressive performers he's going to start. Which is always the best problem a manager can have.
The Wanderers next match is against Tokyo Verde on Thursday the 12th of September.
