First match of the season at Rooty Hill Turf Farm.

It's just WSW's luck to have a 7pm KO - but still having the temperature as well over 30 degrees.

I wonder if it'll get pushed back.

1-0 WSW. Sophie Harding. Just about halftime.

From what i can glean from watching the girls, Robbie Hooker has given the girls some confidence. He even changed things up at half time: hoofing it long to Harding and Caspers, then tightened up the passing in the second half.

Maybe he is a better coach than we gave him credit for early on. Plus he is working with the players he has, not with the greatest squad. But if you can a group of players who were shattered at the beginning of the season, then get a draw, a high scoring loss 4-3 against the big spenders in Heartle$$, followed by a win against the Fraudsters away then this win, it is nearly miraculous.

Next game is against Brisbane away at Perry Park.

Just what I have been thinking. There's definitely something different going on here. Perhaps more ambition than we have them credit for?

Sophie Harding going from a non-scoring striker to a scoring striker. Dumont couldn't handle one of her shots

Maybe the new coach isn't as shyte as many people said

They are still frustrating to watch. The first half was awful until the final 5 minutes. Women's football is still the poor cousin in our country, and so much more needs to be invested at the grass roots level to get the basics right across the board.

For sure.

The only way to improve football at all levels is to develop and implement a coach development program in all jurisdictions and levels with both a tactical and technical elements, not just the 4-3-3 play out from the back and run fast.

He finally learned all of the players' names

Well he has done a bit more than that

Using 3 CB with Any Harrison to CB and 2 wingbacks, usually Apostalakis and Matos. Plus 2 quick strikers in Harding and Caspers. He dropped the US GK and has used Sham Khamis. Plus Olivia Price back to the starting line-up.

Yeah I'd have to agree. I watched a lot of NSW womens NPL 15 or  years ago and the standard then appeared better than the quality in that game. I'm sure there is more investment but I'm not seeing the results. Basic control and awareness severely lacking

May I ask if that competition was played in winter or summer?

Because keep in mind that the temperature for this match was in the 30s, and that was after 7pm..!

They were all winter comps.....many of the girls also played Premier/State league Futsal in the summer at the time. I'm fully aware of the temperature issues but having viewed a few games last season and this my observations still stand.

Yeah, there's still quite a bit of the Futsal/A-League Women's crossover (most recently Maddie Caspers who Sydney FC signed yesterday, who scored a goal for UTS Northside in Futsal earlier this month!), as well as the crossover for Futsal/NPLWNSW and League One Women's. Which is great to see!

One more question - was that based on watching WSW matches specifically, or the league in general?

Because there is a hell of a difference between the Sydney FC's and Western United's of the A-League Women's, compared to, say, the Wanderers.
(Which is why I attend a fair few of Sydney's women's matches - everything about them is next level compared to WSW.)

I try and watch across the board.......Sydney have been the benchmark since the inception of the W League what with Staj as the initial coach and great succession planning. In recent years City have joined Sydney as the standard to achieve. Most of the other clubs have had their moments with perhaps Brisbane and Canberra now failing to live up to the success of previous campaigns. I'm undecided on Western at the moment but they have recruited well which makes them look better. Sadly the other NSW teams (Wanderers, Mariners and Jets) are way behind Sydney. So in essence I enjoy watching Sydney FC and Melb City if I want to see a bit of quality.

Oh yes, I absolutely agree with that!

I think that's the crux of it. Players of quality are recruited to the best clubs, as expected, but there is a massive gulf to the next levels down. This comes to the difference between clearly identified, well-developed talented individuals and neglected Juniors who become squaddies to fill numbers. Less apparent in boy's ranks.

On a positive note - there was an attendance of 968 for 08/12/23: ALW: Western Sydney Wanderers v Central Coast Mariners.

Looks to be the highest attendance for the venue, surpassing the men’s Australia Cup Playoff between WSW and Brisbane Roar on 15/03/2022 of 824!
